US 75 Highway Civil and Pavement Engineering Project Overview

Alternative Flexible Pavement Design to Reduce Construction Time and Save Money

Project Background

US 75, Denison, Texas

The TxDOT US 75 project implemented a ramp reversal at the FM 503 direct connector interchange, reconstructed the SB Frontage Road (FR) from W. Loy Lake Road to FM 691. The project also re-built the westbound FM 503 direct connector to only connect to the new SB frontage road rather than US 75 main lanes. The project will substantially improve traffic flow and enhance safety and has been designed to allow construction time and budget to be reduced. Better access was also provided to all the new developments west of the existing frontage road.

Practice: Civil and Pavement Engineering

Sector: Road

Location: Denison, Texas

Services: Roadway Pavement and Non-destructive Pavement Evaluation

The Problem

Traditional construction along the existing corridor would be disruptive and could cause problems due to subgrade reaction with stabilizing materials.

The Goal

Avoid pavement damage due to subgrade stabilization problems and reduce construction time and budget.

Our Solution

HVJ analyzed Falling Weight Deflectometer data to determine the condition of the existing pavement section and develop options beyond complete removal and reconstruction of the pavement.  Alternative solutions were considered to minimize edge drop-off during construction and eliminate potential lime/gypsum interactions that could negatively impact pavement smoothness and design life. An alternative solution reduced excavation by 6 inches and reused much of the existing pavement structure materials. Full-depth reclamation, blending of the asphalt surface and existing granular base, allowed a reduction of funds otherwise required for new materials. The final structure incorporated geogrid rather than lime, which combined with a cement-treated base and surface is predicted to be a long-lasting pavement. The combination of recycled materials and design for the use of geogrid will reduce construction time and cost.

The Results

  • Reduced construction time
  • Reduced construction cost
  • Reuse of existing pavement materials
